|简要介绍|| It was the afternoon of 26th of August, 1966, that plant and animal breeders participating in the Eleventh Pacific Science Congress held in Tokyo took the occasion to have a meeting for discussing establishment of a society of plant and animal breeders in the area of Asia and Oceania. The main problems discussed at the meeting were if there was a possibility of successfully establishing such a society, what the purpose and activity of the society should be, and how the society should be named.|
The attendants in the meeting unanimously took interest in the society and agreed to organize a preparatory committee consisting of EIGHT MEMBERS. They were: Dr. A. C. Campos (Philippines), Dr. N. Parthasarathy (FAO), Dr. S. Sigurbjorsson (FAO/JAEA), Dr. E. W. Spraque (Thailand), Dr. M.S. Swaminathan (India), Dr. T. Hirobe (Japan), Dr. T. Matsuo (Japan), and Dr. K.I. Sakai (Japan).
Dr. Matsuo was nominated for the Chairman of the Preparatory Committee and the planned society was named by Dr. N. Parthasarathy “SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF BREEDING RESEARCHES IN ASIA AND OCENIA” or in abbreviation, “SABRAO”. The committee investigated fundamental principles of the Society, while the preparatory work to be performed before the birth of the Society was entrusted to Japanese members. Upon this, a subcommittee was organized in Japan to work out a blueprint for establishing the Society. The members of the Japanese subcommittee, in addition to the three Japanese members of the Preparatory Committee, included Dr. H. Akemine, Dr. A. Hoshiide, Dr. T. Hosoda, Dr. M. Iizuka, Dr. S. Iyama, Dr. K. Kondo, Dr. N. Kondo, Dr. K. Murakami, Dr. H. I. Oka, Dr. S. Okabe, Dr. T. Okuno, Dr. K. Osone, and Dr. R. Toda.
On June 9, 1967, the second meeting of the Preparatory Committee was held in Taipei, Taiwan, on the occasion of the Third FAO/IAEA Meeting on the Use of Induced Mutation in Rice Breeding. In this meeting, a draft of constitution of the Society prepared by the Japanese subcommittee was presented for discussion. On October 13, 1967, the subcommittee in Japan was called to work out the program on the basis of the report from the meeting in Taiwan.
In the meanwhile, a membership campaign started. This was conducted by sending copies of the prospectus of the Society to plant and animal breeders in the area.
In the afternoon of 22nd of August, 1968, two years after the first conference of the Preparatory Committee, the opening ceremony of the Society was held in Tokyo Price Hotel on the occasion of the Twelfth International Congress of Genetics. The ceremony was attended by more than 230 persons. Among them were diplomatic representatives, officials of international biological and agricultural organizations, and a number of geneticists from the different countries, in addition to about 130 Japanese participants.
